| I originally began the "Great Websites" back in 1999, which was a few months after the original SM website went online. Sorry to report that as of August, 2007, I've discontinued the "Great Websites" pages. There were a variety of reasons for the discontinuance. Over the years, it was a time consuming and difficult effort to update and maintain due to websites being discontinued, new websites being added ... and the never-ending page revisions and address link changes made by the owners and developers of these sites. Many of the sites were no longer being updated by their owners, and some were full of missing pages and images, broken links to other sites, etc. A few disappeared when their Internet Service Provider was bought and merged into other ISPs. Others faded away when the site owner changed their home or business Internet Service Provider. Quite a few of the sites were done by college students, and those remained online only during their attendance at that university or college. Some websites were just plain discontinued or abandoned. A few websites went commercial (meaning you had to pay for viewing some or all of their content). But the most time consuming effort was in monitoring the sites that I had on the list. A few went from "Great Websites" to questionable (objectionable) status. For example, there were a handful in which the original owner didn't renew - or forgot to renew - their domain name, and their domain name wound up being acquired by others. And there were a few websites which began depositing spyware on users PCs ... or they began the use of banner ads and/or pop ups and/or had links to objectionable websites ... some required new/questionable registration procedures for users to access their site, and soon after registering, the user was bombarded with e-mails with spam and viruses.
